Tenerife still! (Saturday 10 February)

Our Marella and Mein Schiff neighbours have left and the port schedule for today suggests we'll be on our own.

The distinctive flat-bottomed and sometimes ragged Passat trade winds are in evidence here this morning.

Well, I have been feeling guilty today - guilty at neglecting to visit Puerto de la Cruz for at least the last 30 years.

When we were last there I remember thinking that it was OK but perhaps not a big deal.  It turns out that 30 years is an awful long time around here and so much has changed - and all for the better.

This was our second day in Tenerife and we still had the hire car. We decided to go to Puerto de la Cruz which was a 40 minute drive. We hadn't been there in over 25 years.  It did not disappoint. Having found a car parking space we set off walking to find that we were really high up with a fantastic view over the coast. The waves were crashing on the shore and we could see that there were many surfers.

We walked down to the shore, passing some amazing properties and a few shops. We also found out that Agatha Christie had spent time in Puerto de la Cruz and some of her book titles were written on the sides of the steps.

We soon found a bar overlooking the sea where we enjoyed drinks and a snack lunch whilst watching the surfers.

We then walked along a lovely pedestrian area on the sea front where there were ships and street cafes and we did a bit of shopping.

It was then time for the long walk uphill back to the car and then we returned to the ship for a drink. Unbelievably Elizabeth bumped into Richard Mitchell in the buffet and we had a lovely catch-up with him and Katherine.

Apologies that these photos are all posted in reverse order.  Whilst Blogger software is a free-to-use utility, it can be a little infuriating at times.

The 'Headliners' put on another show in the theatre - 'Reel to Reel', featuring music from British films.

And then we had a long, slow farewell from Santa Cruz as we reversed out of the harbour and into the Atlantic for our voyage to Madeira.
